Mark a starting downbeat, count whole bars, then mark the final downbeat. The tool converts the beats you counted and the time between your marks into BPM. No audio upload is needed.
Press on a downbeat. Count each full bar until the final downbeat.

Count spaces between downbeats, not the marks
If you start at a bar line and finish at the next bar line, one whole bar elapsed. Count the complete bars between the first and last mark. The opening downbeat is a boundary, not an extra beat to add. If you count four bars in four-beat meter, the tool counts sixteen beat intervals between your two marks.
What the number measures
The calculation is counted beats multiplied by sixty, then divided by elapsed seconds. The timer uses the browser's high-resolution clock; the result still depends on where you place the two marks and whether your bar count matches the pulse. A late final mark lowers the displayed BPM, while an early final mark raises it. This tool does not listen to or analyze the recording.
When this method helps
Use two boundary taps when you can follow the beginning of each bar but individual notes are too dense to tap consistently. A longer passage separates the two manual marks over more counted beats, although a missed bar makes the count wrong. If you can follow each pulse comfortably, use the continuous tempo tapper instead. If your hand timing is uneven, the interval diagnostic can show which tap differed.
Questions
Should I mark the last beat or the next downbeat?
Mark the next downbeat after the whole bars you counted. Stopping on the last beat shortens the timed span while leaving the entered bar count unchanged.
Can this tell me the time signature?
No. You choose the beats per bar. If that choice is wrong, the BPM calculation will be scaled by the wrong beat count. The two marks alone do not identify meter.
What if the music speeds up within the passage?
The answer is one average over the measured span. To compare passages separately, use the two-section BPM comparison and tap a consistent pulse in each passage.
