How to tune a bass when the lowest note is hard to read
Pluck near the neck with a moderate touch, then let the initial clank fade. The page compares the detected fundamental or octave harmonic with the selected bass string, which keeps E1 and A1 useful on small built-in microphones.
- Mute unused strings with both hands so overtones from another string do not pull Auto toward the wrong target.
- Lock E1, A1, D2, or G2 if the note is far away, then adjust slowly while repeating short, even plucks.
- Finish with a second pass from E1 through G2 after the neck and strings have settled.
Four-string bass tuning and the extra five-string low note
The default tool follows the requested four-string sequence. A standard five-string bass adds B0 below E1; its reference is listed here so the octave is explicit even though the live target buttons stay focused on four strings.
Five-string note: a five-string bass adds B0 below the four targets shown in the live tuner.
Why the bass display shows target and detected frequencies
A bass note contains a low fundamental and stronger harmonics that phone and laptop microphones may capture differently. The target line is folded to the correct open-string octave while the detected line stays visible, so you can see when the engine is following an octave harmonic.
Bass audio stays between the microphone and this tab
Starting the tuner opens a live browser microphone stream. Analysis happens in the shared on-device pitch engine, and pressing Stop closes the stream. No bass audio file is built or uploaded.
Bass Tuner Online questions
These answers focus on low-frequency pickup, muting, five-string instruments, and octave readings.
Why does a bass tuner sometimes hear an octave above?
Small microphones often capture a harmonic more strongly than the fundamental. This page folds that reading back toward E1, A1, D2, or G2 and shows both values.
Can this tune a five-string bass?
The live target buttons cover E1, A1, D2, and G2. The additional lowest string on a five-string bass is B0, and the reference-tone row includes B0 for an ear-based check.
Should I use the neck pickup or bridge pickup?
Use the setting that produces the cleanest sustained note, keep effects off, and mute neighboring strings. Acoustic sound through the device microphone also works.
Why calibrate the room before tuning bass?
Low background hum can keep a tuner awake. Calibration measures the current noise floor locally and adjusts this session’s gate before you pluck.
Stop closes the bass microphone stream; leaving the page does the same. Audio never leaves the device.
