Why are there four targets for eight strings?
Each course contains two adjacent strings tuned to the same note, so G3, D4, A4, and E5 cover all eight strings.
Should both strings in a course be played while tuning?
Tune them separately first. Playing both before they match can produce two competing pitch readings and makes the direction harder to judge.
What is the pulsing sound after both strings are close?
It comes from two nearby pitches interacting. The pulse slows as the pair approaches the same pitch, which complements the cents meter.
Why does the E5 course need a lighter pluck?
A hard pick attack adds noise and can bend the beginning of the note. Use a small, clean stroke and read the short sustain after it.
